Owning Your Time This Holiday Season

The holiday season is often described as the most wonderful time of the year, but for many, it can feel like the most overwhelming. With an endless list of parties, family gatherings, shopping, cooking, and other commitments, it’s easy to feel stretched too thin. Instead of feeling joy and connection, you may find yourself exhausted and resentful, wondering where your time has gone.

The good news? You can reclaim your time and navigate the holidays on your terms. Here are some strategies to help you own your time this season, making space for what truly matters.

1. Prioritize What Matters Most

Take a moment to reflect on what truly brings you joy and meaning during the holidays. Is it creating memories with loved ones, maintaining cherished traditions, or simply taking time to recharge and reflect? Make a list of your top priorities and keep them at the forefront of your decision-making. This clarity allows you to focus your energy on what aligns with your values and let go of obligations that don't. By consciously prioritizing, you’ll avoid the common holiday trap of trying to do it all and instead enjoy the season in a way that feels meaningful and fulfilling.

2. Set Boundaries Without Guilt

Overcommitting is a quick way to feel overwhelmed and resentful during the holidays. Practice saying no to invitations or obligations that don’t align with your priorities, and remember that protecting your time is not selfish—it’s necessary. You can decline graciously without guilt by expressing gratitude for the invitation while standing firm. For example, say, “I appreciate the invitation, but I’m unable to attend this year. I hope it’s a wonderful event!” This kind of response shows kindness while reinforcing your boundaries, helping you maintain control over your schedule and energy.

3. Schedule “Me Time”

Amid the hustle and bustle, it’s vital to remember that you deserve time to rest and recharge. Block out specific times in your calendar for yourself, whether that’s reading a book, enjoying a relaxing bath, or taking a quiet walk. Treat this time as non-negotiable, just as you would an appointment with a friend or colleague. When you nurture yourself, you’ll find that you have more to give to others and can approach the holiday season with greater patience, energy, and enthusiasm.

4. Delegate and Simplify

You don’t have to shoulder the burden of the holiday season alone. Share responsibilities with family members or friends—assign tasks like decorating, meal prep, or gift-wrapping. If your budget allows, consider outsourcing some tasks, like hiring a cleaning service or ordering catered meals. Look for ways to streamline your efforts, such as using digital invitations instead of printed ones or scaling back elaborate plans to focus on simpler, more meaningful moments. Simplifying doesn’t mean compromising; it means choosing what’s most important and letting go of unnecessary stress.

5. Be Present in the Moment

In our hyper-connected world, it’s easy to get distracted by phones, notifications, or even mental checklists of what’s next. Challenge yourself to fully engage in each moment—when you’re with family, put down your phone and give them your undivided attention. When wrapping gifts, think about the joy they’ll bring the recipient instead of rushing to finish. By slowing down and truly experiencing the present, you’ll find a sense of abundance and fulfillment that makes your time feel more meaningful. Presence isn’t about doing more; it’s about being fully there for the moments that matter most.
